There is now less than 100 days until the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) comes into effect. The regulation will change the rights that individuals have around data that companies hold about them. You can find out further details about the regulation here.
Having worked with organisations to help prepare them for GDPR, it has become apparent that many companies are unaware of what data they are holding, how it is being used and who has access to it. This is something that companies will need to have a good understanding of by 25 May 2018.
We have also heard from legal experts and other sources that it’s expected that less scrupulous law firms will try to treat GDPR like PPI, testing companies’ compliance with the aim of generating compensation claims against companies that fail to meet with regulations.
To accompany this, we are also expecting a rise in phishing attacks, with the aim of creating data breaches that can trigger legal action and compensation claims against organisations. As such companies, should be extra vigilant around their IT security in the coming months.
There is still time to prepare your business for GDPR. Akita has helped a number of organisations perform a GDPR Audit that assesses how they use data, and outline the next steps to secure their IT systems.
